In
March 1964 three Rover Scouts died whilst taking part
in the Four Inns Walk.
Prior to this walkers or ramblers who became lost, climbers
who fell and unable to move, either on the high peak mountains
or moorland, or in the dales of Derbyshire, had to rely
on good fortune to be found and helped.
After the Four Inns tragedy the
Peak District Mountain Rescue Organization was formed
to co-ordinate mountain
rescue work in the Peak District. Woodhead Mountain
Rescue team forms part of this organization.
Around
1970, as more and more people were exploring the
hills, the accident potential increased and the
need for
trained rescue personnel became apparent.
A comprehensive rescue service could only be relied
upon if the teams were properly trained and equipped.
